For guests

So you want to be on the podcast.

Here's how a conversation on The Exit Interview works, where it's filmed, and what to expect on the day.

NYC

Every episode is filmed in person in Brooklyn. Guests need to be based in New York City or willing to travel to NYC for the recording.

The conversation takes three parts

01

The exit interview

Looking back

The retrospective. Imagine this is the last day of your working life and we're doing the final exit interview — for everything.

  • —What's the through-line of your career, told with hindsight?
  • —How much was designed, and how much was drift?
  • —What did building a career require that nobody warned you about?
  • —Did People teams ever truly help you?
02

Your story

Custom questions

Where we go specific. Based on research into your career, we bring 3–5 questions unique to you: a pivot, a decision, a defining project, a thread we want to pull on.

  • —Shared with every guest before recording.
  • —Anything off-limits gets dropped, no explanation needed.
03

What remains

Purpose and what's next

We close by asking what all of it was for, and what comes after.

  • —If your career ended today, what would you take with you?
  • —What did purpose mean at 25, and what does it mean now?
  • —When the real exit interview comes what do you want to be able to say when you look back on the actual last day of your career?

The details

How it's made

Everything is handled on site: 4K multi-cam recording, professional mics, lighting, and a studio tech. All post-production is on us: if a guest says something they'd rather cut, they flag it and it's gone.
